The devices are the easy part. The reason your smart home is unreliable is almost always the wiring behind it.
Smart home frustration is rarely about the app. It is a switch box with no neutral, a camera on a battery you have to climb a ladder to replace, a thermostat with no common wire, and an access point too far from the garage. Fix the wiring and most of the aggravation disappears.
Older homes were often wired with the switch loop carrying only the hot conductor. Most smart switches need a neutral to power themselves. You have three options: run a neutral, choose a no-neutral switch that works with your specific fixture, or move the control to the fixture instead. Which is cheapest depends entirely on what is in your wall.
Battery cameras are a reasonable answer when running cable is genuinely impossible. Everywhere else, Power over Ethernet is better in every way that matters: continuous recording, no dead batteries, stable connection, and one cable doing both jobs.
Twenty smart devices on a router sitting in a basement corner will behave badly, and no amount of new gear fixes it. Cat6 to two or three well-placed access points solves more smart home problems than any single purchase.
Smart thermostats need constant power. Sometimes there is already an unused conductor in the wall. Sometimes new thermostat cable is the clean answer. Adapters at the air handler work but add a failure point.
Anything that only works while a specific company keeps a server running, unless you are comfortable with it becoming a paperweight. Prefer devices that support open standards and keep working on your local network if the internet drops.
Pre-wire. It costs a fraction while the walls are open and it is the difference between a house that accepts new technology easily and one that fights it. Cat6 to every likely device location, conduit where you can, neutrals everywhere, and a small network closet.
