9 Signs Your Electrical Panel Needs Upgrading (Missouri Homeowner's Guide)
Dimming lights, warm breakers, and a panel full of tandem breakers are all telling you something. Here is how to read the signs before they become an emergency.

Two houses on the same street can get wildly different quotes for the same charger. Here is exactly what drives the number.
The unit on the wall is a known number you can look up. Everything behind it is what varies: the distance from the panel to the parking spot, whether the panel has capacity, whether the run is through open basement joists or buried under a driveway, and whether your local jurisdiction wants an inspection.
A charger mounted on the garage wall six feet from the panel is the cheapest install there is. A charger on the far side of a detached garage a hundred feet across a yard involves trenching, conduit, a sub panel, and a much larger conductor. Same charger, several times the labor and material.
This is the biggest single variable. A 200 amp service in a house without electric heat usually swallows a 48 amp charger without complaint. A full 100 amp panel in a house with an electric range and an electric water heater may not. When capacity is tight, there are three answers, in ascending order of cost: dial the charger down to a lower amperage, install a load management device that pauses charging when the house draws heavily, or upgrade the service.
A quote given over the phone without anyone looking at your panel is a guess. The load calculation is a short piece of arithmetic that determines whether the install is safe and whether you need the expensive option. Any electrician who will not do it is not the one to hire.
A NEMA 14-50 outlet lets you unplug and take the charger with you, and it caps out at 40 amps of continuous draw. Hardwiring allows 48 amps on most units and is more durable outdoors. For a garage you plan to keep, hardwired is generally the better install.
Weather-rated enclosures, GFCI protection, proper conduit, and mounting that will not sag matter more outdoors. Two-car households often do better with one higher-amperage unit and a load-sharing setup than with two separate circuits.
Most jurisdictions treat a new 240V circuit as permitted work. The permit is not expensive and the inspection protects you. Skipping it can create problems at resale and with insurers.
Ask every bidder the same four questions: what amperage circuit, hardwired or receptacle, is a load calculation included, and is the permit in the price. Quotes that look cheap usually differ on one of those four.

There are only four real reasons a breaker trips. Knowing which one you have tells you whether it can wait until Monday.
It lasted a hundred years. That is exactly the problem: it was never designed for the century it ended up in.
